I have heard one too many horror stories, so as soon as I can get one of my techie friends to help me, I will be a private blogger.

Given the nature of your blog (lots of pictures, using the names of kids, etc.) I would go private. I don't use my name on my blog at all nor the names of my kids. Pictures of us are rare. Lots of freakshows out there.
While you're making changes to the blog, you might want to go with a less fancy background template. It's cute and all but takes FOREVER to load.
